In 1999 Steven Nott approached British tabloid newspapers The Sun and The Daily Mirror to advise them about what is commonly called phone hacking - that is to say retrieving a person’s voicemail messages by using a standard PIN. Both newspapers showed strong interest but ultimately no stories appeared. In view of the fact that it has recently been alleged that phone hacking was common practice at the time and indeed there have been specific allegations against the Mirror’s then editor Piers Morgan, their reluctance to publish may be interpreted as having been motivated by self interest.
